Mahavira was the 24th and last tirthankara of Jainism. A tirthankara is someone who helps people on the path to enlightenment as an Jain holy figure. In this sculpture Mahavira is captured with his hands clasp together in an attitude of meditation. There is a diamond
shape on his bare chest that is typical of tirthankaras. Above him is a palanquin with figures of devotees including two figures on elephants.
Surrounding Mahavira are his predecessors, the 23 tirthankaras that have come before him all in a position of meditation.
